The Counselling Process at Avalon Healing Sanctuary
Your Initial Session
Our first session is really a get-to-know-you session where together we will move through the following:
Information Gathering
We will guide you through our intake process by asking questions about your history, life circumstances and your reasons for seeking counselling.
Informed Consent
We will explain how counselling at Avalon Healing Sanctuary works and ask you to review and sign a consent form that outlines our policies, confidentiality rules, fees, bookings and the structure of sessions.
Building Rapport
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and begin building trust.
Determining Fit
It's an opportunity to see if you feel comfortable with your counsellor and our approach to counselling, as you are not obligated to continue if you don't feel you're a good match. Similarly, we will also be assessing whether your counsellor is the right practitioner to help you with your issues. In the rare case where we feel she is not the best practitioner for you, we will provide you with a reference to another counsellor or counselling service. Reasons for referral may include a need for specialised care. For example if a referral to an addiction service is needed. A fundamental aspect of our duty-of-care to you is that we will not take on a client outside the parameters of our counsellors' training and professional competency.
Establishing Expectations
We will explain what you can expect from the counselling process and begin to formulate a plan to address your concerns.
Contracting
We work in 4 or 7-session blocks and you will be invited to make a commitment to a 3 or 6-session block to address your concerns.
Subsequent Sessions
Your subsequent 3 or 6 sessions are when we will work through your counselling plan to address your presenting issue. At the end of the block of sessions, there will be a review to determine whether to continue or end counselling. If you choose to continue, you will be contracted for a further 3 or 6 sessions depending upon your therapeutic needs.

We cannot change what we're not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change."
